Retributioners official website is launched

And here it is:
http://www.theretributioners.tv/

Guess what? Almost exactly one year ago, we launched episode 1 of The Retributioners. I know, I can't believe it's been a year. What was initially just a vehicle to showcase my work has turned into something far bigger than I ever thought it would. You can see this by all the wonderful people who have contributed their time and talent on this project.

All of my actors and contributors are extremely talented and committed. Read their bios. It's amazing.

That's the thing about this show. I really believe we deliver a high quality show. We focus on the acting and writing.

So, I want to thank everyone who has contributed. I also want to encourage all of you to explore the website: share, bookmark, comment, and debate! There are a lot more episodes of revenge to come!

Retributioners Update!

Hi guys! Just wanted to make sure I gave you guys an update. Sorry we’ve been so out of touch these days! Been REALLY busy these past few weeks!

We are FINALLY shooting episode 7 tomorrow, on my birthday of all days! This is a GOOD thing, so I can forget about how old I am getting. We hope to edit it as quickly as possible and get it to you guys. This one is REALLY going to be different, and concerns a former one-night stand.

We actually held auditions last week for two roles. This was so hard to cast, as we met some really great actors! We are very happy to have two very talented, seasoned actors with us for this episode: Aaron Mathias and Keri Setaro.

It’s raining like cats and dogs here in the city! Must go.

Stay dry! – steph

Chris Henchy picked us on Funny or Die!

Just a few hours after we landed back in New York on Sunday (after a much-needed nap) Eric and I found out that "Entourage" producer and Will Ferrell pal Chris Henchy had picked "The Retributioners - Episode 4: Drunk Dial Party" as his favorite pick for the month on the "Funny Or Die" web site. Since then, our views on the site have zoomed! Here's Episode 4 again:

We've also been getting a great response as a result of going on iTunes in the last week. Our show is absolutely free to download into your iPod, and can be found here, if you have iTunes:

http://www.itunes.com/podcast?id=282267700

Finally, we've met some great folks at the festival who we'd like to mention. We saw their movies, and they are both great!

We met Glenn Gers, a successful Los Angeles screenwriter who made his directorial debut with his film, "Disfigured," a movie about women and weight:

http://www.disfiguredmovie.com/

We also met Robert Peters, an actor, director and writer. He made his feature directorial debut with his film, "Half-Empty." I highly recommend it, especially for you folks who love improvised dialog:

Continue to watch "The Retributioners," and spread the word!

Thank you!

Yes! We’re on iTunes!

It's official, folks! We made it to iTunes! You can now download our show, and watch us on your iPod! Imagine running on the treadmill, and watching Juanita Crackwhore (from Episode 2). Here is the official iTunes link, which will take you to the iTunes store:

http://www.itunes.com/podcast?id=282267700

It's so cool! You can write a review of the show, and you can send it to your friends! If you don't have iTunes, the link might not work. Give it a try!

Up next…..I got to order those T-shirts I was talking about!

Oh yes! Almost forgot to mention that Eric and I will be going to Oklahoma this week for the 8th annual deadCenter Film Festival! Eric's film, "S&M Queen for a Day," made it as an official selection! If you never saw it, you can watch it here:

It has over 87,000 views on YouTube at this point (probably because it has the words 'S&M' in it). In any case, while we're in Oklahoma, we'll be promoting "The Retributioners."

Let me know how the iTunes thing works out! – steph

We just got featured in a brand new online magazine called "Funny Not Slutty." It features comedy for women created by female producers, writers, humorists, and comedians.

We are on the front page of the first edition!

It looks like it will be great place to discover female comedic talent all over the U.S. They have a forum, announcements, etc. It's BRAND NEW, so not much content on their yet. However, I am imagine it will be very popular.

Here is the link:

Also, we are in the process of creating Episode 5. It's taken us a bit longer than we thought, because we're having issues with scheduling and locations.

We hope to have it up VERY shortly!

a ho hum actor's life

This has been such a strange week. Eric and I are finally settled in the new apartment. I really like it! It has so many perks.

But now what? It’s so hard switching gears again. Makes me a little depressed. Last week we tried shooting a ’quickie’ Episode 4, but neither one of us were happy with the results. So we have a choice.....do a reshoot, or, do as we originally planned....shoot a REAL, full-length episode... not the quickie. This is a tough choice.

Eric is going to be busy with his work, so he can’t focus on this problem until later in the week.

Let me switch gears for a moment....I’m really worried about what’s going to happen come June 30th. With AFTRA pulling out of "Phase One" we now have a true war between SAG and AFTRA. This is going to make things really complicated in the next few months regarding negotiations for the TV/Theatrical Contract. The war between SAG & AFTRA could contribute to a possible actors’ strike July 1st. We all know the BILLIONS of dollars lost during the WGA strike.

"The Retributioners" is under a SAG Internet Contract, which has me worried. If there is a SAG strike on July 1st, this could mean trouble for our show. Then again, maybe not.......the internet is still quite new to the whole union thing, so I wonder what will happen.

Let’s all cross our fingers and hope things go well over the next few months.

I know a whole bunch of you who are not actors who are probably wondering what I am talking about, or need some more context, so let me give you a link which summarizes it:

Featured on Web TV Hub

Hey everybody! Yes, I know I’ve been bad about the blogging lately......you all know the deal! The move, blah blah blah. We’re getting back on track. I thought there was NO WAY IN HELL we’d be able to get a new episode up this month, but guess what? My genius husband once again came up with an idea that can be filmed really quickly, so let’s hope we can do this thing! Cross our fingers.

In some good news, looks like someone discovered "The Retributioners" and wrote about us in Web TV Hub - Internet TV & Video Entertainment Magazine! So, I want to send a BIG thank you to Iman Peera who wrote the article!

Here is the link:

Oh! And I saw Tom Patrick Stephens last week in "Parlour Song" at the Atlantic Theater Company (see my previous blog post for THAT big story)! He got to go on as he was the understudy for the lead! All I can say is, WOW! Tom is really an amazing actor! First off, he was supposed to play a fat, bald guy, and if you all saw my Episode 1, then you know he is anything but fat and bald! He’s ridiculously charming and the ladies love him! But because he is such a great actor, you really suspend your disbelief! And you know why? Because his character was vulnerable and insecure....it didn’t matter if he was really fat and bald or not! Of course, it’s far more complicated than that for me to even describe, but I wanted to all let you know how our boy is doing. Congratulations Tom!

It’s been such a crazy month, it was nice to kind of just relax today, and think about what I need to do next. We’re almost fully unpacked. Can’t wait to show you guys the new place!

We’re back! And some cool news about Tom Stephens!

Yes, we had the move from hell last week! Seriously, the worst move of my life, and we only moved two avenue blocks away! Eric's desk broke in half, we lost a chair, I'm living out of boxes, and I had an awful assignment due at my day job WHILE I was moving last week.

The only saving grace was we got our internet running pretty quickly. WHEW!

While I don't have any exciting news to share, our lead actor from Episode 1 is doing great! Tom Patrick Stephens, who you might remember as Sean Chambers from "Episode 1: The Virginity Pact," is understudying a leading role at the Atlantic Theater Company in the play,
"Parlour Song." Well, he gets to go on for three days this week, and he is playing opposite Emily Mortimer! Here's a link to the show's info:

http://www.atlantictheater.org/page.aspx?id=12016840

I am so excited for him, it's his big break! I am going to see him in the show Thursday night, so I'll tell you all about it!

If you are not from NY, or know the theater scene around here, doing a show at the Atlantic is a very big deal. Not only that, he's playing the lead role! So friggin' cool.

So, here's a shout out to Tom from everybody at "The Retributioners." Congratulations!!!! Remember us little people when you make it big.

Did It - Episode 3!

I don't know how, in the middle of all this craziness, but we did it! We filmed a short Episode 3 today, all shot in my apartment. Yes, the very apartment I am about to leave. I am in the middle of editing it right now, with the hope the whole thing can be finished by tomorrow night. VERY wishful thinking.....but this is a very simple episode to edit.

It wasn't the original Episode 3 idea we had....we're going to have to push that to Episode 4, or even 5, as it's going to require a bit of more planning to shoot. However, I think #3 is really different and funny. We'll see what you think. I'm proud of it, considering the little time we had to actually do it.

One of my closest friends, Jessica Myhr, will be playing the part of Madison. Sorry I have no pics this time....we probably packed our camera for all we know! Don't mind the mess in our house......

Vote for the Purse

OK, today I am stealing, but I got permission to do it. Eric, my husband, wrote this great blog yesterday about the Carly Hennessy/Smithson controversy on American Idol, and there is something inspirational about it. He posted it on his MySpace page, which you can view at http://www.myspace.com/ericandsalo. Here it is:

OK. First thing: I hate the show "American Idol" and everything it stands for.

Now that I've said that, I'll admit that a certain Web site called "Vote For The Worst," which rose to some prominence last year, makes the show a little bit more palatable as a guilty pleasure for me. Every week, the Web site prompts its readers to phone in and pick the most comic, clownish or freakish contestant. It is not merely a ploy to ruin the show, as worthy a goal as that would be. No, the writers on VFTW say that their true aim is to play up the entertainment value--to throw the spotlight on shtick--which serves to illuminate the utter artifice of the whole affair, to illuminate it as prefabricated melodrama, to limn the preconceived nature of the suspense.

The site has recently stumbled upon the past history of one of the show's new contestants: Carly Smithson, nee Carly Hennessy. This woman has already had a failed career as a teen pop star at MCA, which flushed millions through the glory hole on her debut album, trying to sell her as the new jailbait on the block--Britney Spears from Dublin, or a Gaelic Liz Phair--only to sell fewer than 500 copies and send the girl home packing where she got a tattoo and an attitude. If I were a paranoid person, this would seem like somebody's still trying to recoup a bad investment by putting her in a reality TV show setting and not telling anybody about it.

The truth is, I don't give a frog's fat ass if she wins, fair or unfair. I'm only bringing it up because it's illuminating to read her story, which you can find in the Wall Street Journal here. If Courtney Love's similar article in Salon
hadn't already convinced you then the WSJ article certainly will that the music industry in this country is evil and that you'd be better off playing the lotto than ever signing a recording contract with a major label. With few happy exceptions, most people who get to the major labels do so with wildly unrealistic expectations, and for that they are not simply crushed by the overwhelming competition, they are robbed blind by people who exploit youthful narcissism and like to turn a buck off silly dreams. I used to write about bands in Austin, Texas, all of whom sought the brass ring of a label signing, and it's demoralizing to see talented people, the people you think you want to be, the people whose most important asset is their fecund imaginations--completely lose hope because they were unwise. They sadly came to realize that all the accouterments of this strange lifestyle--the videos, the recording costs, etc.--are costs that they will have to shoulder themselves eventually before they see any real money. The advances and living expense money usually disappear quickly, and when pro rated out over a few years, don't do you much better than a job at the post office would have. Meanwhile, the most valuable item--the intellectual property known as the songs you write--are robbed from you and become the property of the record company. Adults don't sign away things that could make them money later. Only kids do.

The good news is that I think this is the best time ever for musicians, because now we have the Internet. We can write, produce and sell (if there's demand) our own music without middle-men. What we lose sometimes is professional polish and a bit of legal protection (say, if your music was so good it was pirated). But I think the long-awaited goal of creating an artistic middle class is much closer than it used to be, and I'm happy to think that the music industry, buffeted by piracy and declining sales) is close to dying the death of the bloated gorgon that it is. If you need more money than that offered by the life of a middle-class artist, then I would suggest that you are just greedy and also recommend that you get a real job--specifically as a stock broker, where you can make shitloads of money without being terribly bright. If music is your whole life, I would also politely mention that there's more to life than music, and that learning about something else would probably round you out as a person anyhow.

Since suffering many artistic disappointments in my 20s, I've become a lot happier since I stopped looking for approbation from other people to legitimize my creations. My wife and I make a lot of art and put it on this space, and sometimes you don't know who's out there rooting for you, if anybody. But at the end of the day, if the work is not making you happy, then maybe you don't really want to be an artist in the first place. If you want to do it, you just have to do it, and therein lies the key to most spiritual happiness. It's also nice to patronize those who are doing the same thing. It gives a little power to the masses and offers hope, which is not always a four-letter word.

Holy fuck! This turned into a rant. Something funnier tomorrow, eh?

And there you have it! - stephanie

American Idol - My Favorite Time of Year

So, we're still packing, getting ready for the big move. We're also getting ready to shoot "On a Very Special Retributioners...." so you guys don't have to wait TOO long to watch something while we're in the middle of moving.

However, it's my favorite time of year. American Idol has just aired the top 24 contestants!!!! Am I an Idol fan? Yes, but only for one reason.....and I think it's time you knew this about me........I'm a Worster!

That's right! I am a follower of Vote for the Worst (VFTW)! Been a fan since season 5. If you don't know what I am talking about, it's all about this genius website right here:

http://www.votefortheworst.com/

They are best known for sabotaging last year's show by encouraging their readers to vote for Sanjaya. Yes, I voted for Sanjaya until my fingers bled.

I am not trying to trash these kids' dreams. I am, however, a supporter of that website. People find it extremely mean spirited. It CAN be viewed that way. But for me, it's all about their blogs. It's far more than just a campaign to sabotage reality TV. The site is run by two extremely talented writers who each write a review of the episode right after it airs. They are both hysterical. They go by the names TheFunnyStone and Mr. Chan. The blogs also act as great 'Cliff Notes' to the show so you can get a really funny recap and not have to watch. But seriously, if you want the full VFTW experience, you need to watch the show, then read the website the next morning for the blogs. Or, you can read the comments on their forums. The VFTW fans create the funniest avatars I've ever seen.

So, I am very happy! I just watched the show, now I can sit back and enjoy reading my favorite blog!!!!

If you like MY show, then I can't imagine you not liking VFTW. Please do check them out. There is a lot to read on that site, so just take it in slowly.

The "Wild Boys" are calling!

The crowd likes my Duran Duran posts! Who knew!

OK, in honor of Melanie, I bring you the EXTENDED version of Duran Duran's "Wild Boys." Watch out for Simon Le Bon as he continually gets beaten, abused, and dunked in water. Then he gets bitten by some fake, crazy looking sea monster. John Taylor keeps banging his head against a car. Not my favorite song, but definitely a classic video!

Careless Memories - ahhh Duran Duran

Ok, most of you know about my obsession with Duran Duran, right? Well, here they are, in a video I NEVER see anymore.

We’re Movin’ on Up to the UES

OK, I can FINALLY give some good news. Eric and I are officially moving! We are staying in NYC. We are moving only two blocks away from our house! Pretty funny. We currently live on the Upper East Side. In fact, we're keeping the same exact zip code.

As you can imagine, the unexpected move has stalled things for 'The Retributioners.' But I promise we'll be on track again. I have a lovely, talented actress playing the role of BFF in Episode 3.

It also looks like I'll be working more to make money, which we'll need for this costly move. Can I tell you how much I hate moving?! We have not moved in over five years, so it's very strange to leave here. We got married here. My wedding dress is still hanging outside my bedroom door.

In fact....I never even got it dry cleaned (gross, right)? That dress is part of the decor of the house! I honestly don't even know what to do with it.

So we'll be very busy these next few weeks packing. I am hoping we can squeeze in some Retributioners filming while doing this.

By the way, Vanilla or Chocolate cake? I like chocolate cake with vanilla frosting? What do you prefer????

Now, let me explain...

OK, I think it's time for me to explain what's been going on for the last few weeks, and why we were considering moving to LA.

We're getting kicked out of our apartment. We lived in this apartment for five and a half years! A new management company bought our building, and they want us out, or we'll have to pay $2,800/month. Well, obviously we're not going to do that, so we have to move.

The last few weeks have been a major roller coster ride. Our situation can literally change by the hour! We have to get out of our apartment by April 1st. May seem far away to you now, but while we're producing our show, this is a major distraction. We were not sure for WEEKS whether we had to leave right away or until April. We've looked at many apartments in Mahattan. We've come so close to getting a new place, only to be disappointed in the end. This has been a long and painful process.

So, while trying to find a place to live, I've been working at my day job, and trying to plan Episode 3 of Retributioners. It's been VERY tough to do.

We've been back and forth on the LA issue over and over again. At this point in time, I think we've decided to stay in NY, with the possibility of considering LA in the future.

So, there you have it!!! I'm really scared I won't have Episode 3 ready when I want....so I ask for your patience! We're trying!

Tom Cruise Crazy!

Since the days of my crazy indecisions are coming to a close with the whole LA saga (more on that later), I thought I would send a tribute to all the crazies in the world.

Last night, I had a dream about Tom Cruise and Scientology. Which made me research him tonight and I came across this song/video. Love it!!!

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

ah, the LA thing

Let me continue on this topic, as there was a lot I didn't explain. There are some things I can't get into detail about here, as they have to do with our current living situation. However, let me tell you this:

Over a year ago I went on a program where I stayed in LA for a week, met a ton of casting directors and agents, and made a whole bunch of actor friends who were all considering the move to LA. It was like an LA audition bootcamp, and we learned a lot about making a career in LA. Since that time, more than half of those friends made the move. I stay in close contact with a lot of them.

After that trip, I knew I wanted to be there! I came home ready to pack and move! Eric was not thrilled at all at the idea, being that living in NY was HIS dream. Instead of making the move right away, we decided to do things here in NY to PREPARE for an LA move. Eric was on board.

I wanted to build my film resume, and be eligible for SAG. Well, I did it! But THEN, The Retributioners happened! It was an idea that came out of nowhere, and we both had to produce this thing. Since July, all I've been doing is concentrating on making the webseries a reality.

Well, we did it! But ALL of my concentration these past few months has been on this show. I haven't even gone on any auditions in a long time. As a result, I haven't even been thinking about LA.....I guess I thought we'd think about it when the time comes.

The time came! We are now forced to think about it right now, because our apartment building was bought by a new landlord. And without going into the details, we need to THINK about it right now! Neither one of us was ready to think about it now, because we were both so absorbed in the show.

Yesterday, we decided to stay in NY. My gut feelings on the topic change from one minute to the next. If we don't leave now, we probably never will. If we do leave, all I have is a good network of friends out there. That's about it.

I REALLY don't want to move in the middle of making Retributioners.

Sorry this is so long. Thank you all for the kind words, advice, personal stories....in the end, this is not a life or death situation, just a confusing and draining situation concerning our careers.

LA or no LA

As we're quickly getting ready to shoot episode 3, I'm having to think about my future. OUR future, actually. Over a year ago, I was gung ho about moving to LA We didn't make the move, but I am having to think about it again under our current circumstances. I have no idea what to do.

I really hate being indecisive, but I'm afraid that's one of my flaws. Especially when it comes to life-changing decisions like this one. I almost want fate to decide...which is so silly. You all know me by now, I pretty much make my own way and my own destiny. I'm a strong person.

But I'm faced having to make a choice. LA or NY. I think the truth is I'm scared. I'm really scared to make a choice. How will I know I am making the right choice? I hate feeling like no matter what I choose, I will be sacrificing something. That is what I am up against right now.

Over the last six months, I got consumed with work, and with the webseries. I didn't have to think about this, because I really couldn't. But now I do.

Anyway, that's what's on my mind right now. As a result, I'm getting nothing done.

episode 3, major 80s flashback

I took my breather today, after all the chaos of the week, and now I'm ready for planning Episode 3. This one will be a lot of fun. Eric and I already have ideas, but I'm thinking some 80s related stuff HAS to be incorporated.

One of the biggest things to me back then was Duran Duran. I was obsessed with them.

Episode 3 is going to be about a former BFF and that period you go through before you are officially a teenager. The pre-teen years.

I met with a talent manager today. This is the time to start seeking representation.

So, how are all of you doing? Any good news? How are my new friends out there from Colorado? Florida? Is Germany in the house? LA? Texas? Oklahoma? Who am I missing? Give us a shout out!!!

Moving on to Episode 3

Wow, we finally get episode 2 up, and now we have to think fast about episode 3. I already know what character it is based on, but we have to work out the storyline. I decided to go with a BFF theme......someone who was your very best friend just stops talking to you for what seems like no reason at all.

Whew! Never a dull moment!

So far, already over 100 views on YouTube in less than 24 hours. That's not bad (of course, not the THOUSANDS we'd like to get, but it seems to be climbing faster this time around).

Thank you, everyone, for your support on the show. It really means a lot!

The Retributioners - the webseries

Hi everyone, this is my first blog post on blogger. Decided to try it out. I have a blog on my MySpace page, which is http://www.myspace.com/theretributioners.

I've been working on this webseries called "The Retributioners." I produce it, and my husband directs it. We both do the editing, which is where we do most of our fighting.

It's about a vindictive woman who finds people from her past, and humiliates them. All the dialogue is improvised.

We have a channel on YouTube and Funny or Die. Here are the sites:

What I'm going to do is copy my blog from MySpace over to here and see what happens. Everyday is another adventure. I am so tired, I really don't know where or how I can get myself to write anything right now. The last 48 hours have been hell, between managing my day job, and editing the film.

We have two episodes up so far, and last night we posted "Episode 2: Juanita Crackwhore." Now, she's not really a crackwhore, it's just what I call her. A bully from my young years. Here's the link to Juanita:

Are these real stories? Sort of.....who hasn't had a 'crackwhore' character in their lives, you know? Or someone who dumps you. I think we all want to seek retribution on someone, right?

Actually Juanita was based on three young girls I went to grade school with. Juanita is a combination of the three of them.

Very nice to meet all of you! Love to meet some other filmmakers out there....
